Thai Airports Can Open Suspicious Checked Bags Without Prior Notice commencing from 16 October 2026

Thai airports can open checked baggage without notifying passengers in advance from October 16, 2026, under new Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand rules. The measure applies only when X-ray screening detects suspicious items or objects that could threaten aviation safety.

Inspections must take place in designated areas, with images and evidence recorded so officials can review who opened the bag and what was found. Passengers must be informed afterward. The government says the rules align with international security practices and will help reduce departure delays.

Passengers are advised to use internationally recognized luggage locks, such as TSA locks, and check prohibited-item lists before traveling. Complaints about inspections or resulting damage can be submitted through the airline or at complaint.caat.or.th.
