Contractor in Thailand’s Khon Kaen offers cash to deter cable theft from construction site

A tongue-in-cheek sign at a construction site near Khon Kaen University has gone viral, as contractors plead with thieves to stop stealing electrical cables – even offering them money instead.
The sign, put up at a building site in tambon Sila of Muang district, reads: “ This site has CCTV. Do not steal cables. If you want money, leave your bank account number and we will make a transfer to it. You’ll only get a few baht selling them, but repairs cost tens of thousands.”
The message reflects growing frustration among contractors and residents in the northeastern province, where petty theft has become a recurring problem.
Witoon Kamolnaruabate, an adviser to the Senate subcommittee on police affairs, visited the site on Sunday. Construction workers said thefts occurred despite overnight guards at the camp, with suspects slipping in under cover of darkness.
Mr Witoon said nearby residents have also been targeted repeatedly, with the thieves all believed to be from the same gang.
He said what some may consider minor theft, such as electrical cables, water meters and household items, hits low-income earners hardest.
“Many people see this as a small issue, but it seriously affects those living hand to mouth,” he said, citing a seafood restaurant where stolen power cables led to spoiled stock and heavy losses.
Mr Witoon said the issue had previously been raised at a Senate police subcommittee meeting to examine possible neglect of duty or misconduct, including the extortion of victims. Enforcement improved briefly, but thefts had since resurfaced across the city, with arrests remaining rare.
In another case in tambon Ban Ped, thieves broke into a rented house and stole cash and antique amulets of undetermined value. Despite clear images of the suspect and evidence including a motorcycle with a visible licence plate, no arrests had been made after nearly eight months.
According to Mr Witoon, the tenant and her foreign husband eventually decided to move out due to safety concerns. The house had been broken into four times while they were renting it between 2021 and 2025.
