Vietnam Approves $7.8 Billion to construct Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province
Vietnam’s National Assembly has approved a VND196 trillion ($7.8 billion) project to construct Gia Binh International Airport in Bac Ninh Province. Set to become a world-class aviation hub, the new airport will cater to 30 million passengers by 2030 and expand to 50 million by 2050. Covering nearly 1,900 hectares, the facility will include state-of-the-art infrastructure meeting the highest international standards.
Gia Binh will be built to ICAO’s top 4F classification, designed to accommodate the largest commercial aircraft. The construction will feature two pairs of parallel runways allowing independent operations. The initial phase includes a passenger terminal, cargo terminal, VIP apron, maintenance complex, and 83 aircraft stands, with plans to expand to 123 stands.
The project is financed by investors through equity and legally mobilized funds, marking it a potential growth catalyst for the region. The government envisions Gia Binh as a smart, green hub, aspiring to rank among the world’s top 10 five-star airports per Skytrax benchmarks. It is expected to become a key transit point and aircraft maintenance center for the Asia-Pacific.
However, nearly 7,100 households will be impacted by the land acquisition required for the project. This aspect has prompted concerns regarding resettlement and compensation. As such, authorities are likely to face challenges in addressing these issues fairly and efficiently.
Moving forward, the development is set to transform eastern Hanoi and the northern economic zone, boosting regional connectivity. Construction timelines, regulatory approvals, and stakeholder engagement are critical factors for the project’s progress. The airport aims for completion of its first phase by 2030, aligning with broader strategic goals for Vietnam’s aviation and economic development, reported VN Express.
