Thailand has effectively shelved its proposed Land Bridge megaproject after a government study found it was economically unviable, commercially unlikely to succeed and posed significant environmental risks, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said on Friday.
A government committee concluded that the project offered low business feasibility and could become a major fiscal burden. The study found that slowing global trade, heightened geopolitical uncertainty and strong competition from established regional ports had significantly weakened the project’s prospects. It also concluded that major shipping lines were unlikely to shift their routes to Thailand, while operational challenges would limit the project’s competitiveness.
The environmental review found high risks to marine ecosystems, coastal communities, food security and forests, while public consultations showed broad concern over the project’s environmental impact and transparency. Although some businesses backed the proposal, most participants remained concerned or undecided.
The committee instead recommended expanding Ranong Port and improving rail links connecting the Andaman coast with Thailand’s rail network, creating a freight corridor north to China and east to Gulf of Thailand ports. Asked whether the Land Bridge project had been abandoned, Ekniti said: “You could say that.” The committee’s recommendations will now be submitted to the prime minister before being forwarded to the Cabinet.
