Surat Thani Power Plant Project, Blocks 1-2 is a power plant in Thailand’s Power Development Plan B.E. 2561-2580 (PDP2018) to maintain power system security in the southern region, especially on the Andaman Sea side which still lacks a main power plant in the area. It will also support the growth of the economy and tourism in the southern region in which Surat Thani Province has the 3rd highest electricity demand in the South.
The power plant will be built in the area of the existing Surat Thani Power Plant which has been decommissioned from the system due to an expiry of service life.
With an existing transmission system in the area, there is no need to build a new transmission system, which does not add to the electricity generation cost.
The project has a total generating capacity of around 1,660 MW and uses natural gas as main fuel and diesel as supplementary fuel. Its commercial operation date (COD) is scheduled for 2027 and 2029 for blocks 1 and 2 respectively. In addition, the new power plant will create income and jobs for the locals and will receive funds from the power development fund to further develop the community.
