Rayong’s U-Tapao Airport plan eyes 3 million travellers a year

The launch of the U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Airport City (EECa) development plan aims to transform U-Tapao into a new aviation hub capable of handling three million passengers annually.
The plan was unveiled recently by project developer U-Tapao International Aviation (UTA). Its chief executive Keeree Kanjanapas presented the project alongside Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) secretary-general Chula Sukmanop at the Naval Aviation Command in Ban Chang district, Rayong.
The initiative seeks to establish U-Tapao as Thailand’s third international airport and a regional aviation hub. It also forms part of the EEC’s broader strategy to attract high-quality investment and
high-value tourism to the area. Several domestic and international investors have expressed interest in joining the project, envisioned as a new business ecosystem.
Mr Keeree said UTA is confident the experience of its shareholders will help attract foreign investors and major private firms to invest in EECa.
He said UTA is ready to proceed once the project begins, starting with construction of a new passenger terminal, initially expected to raise capacity to three million passengers a year.
UTA will work with the EEC to introduce government incentives, which are key to building confidence among financial institutions and investors, he added.
Under a Notice to Proceed issued on April 3, certain conditions related to the construction timeline and the opening of the high-speed rail link connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao airports have been relaxed.
Previously, these conditions had to be met before development could begin.
A source said the high-speed rail project remains a critical factor in the success of the U-Tapao Aviation City project, urging the EEC to resolve outstanding obstacles so the rail line can open in tandem with the airport in future.
