Phitsanulok pushed as lower North aviation hub as AEROTHAI plans first Aerodrome Flight Information Service rollout

The government is seeking to position Phitsanulok as an aviation gateway to the lower North, linking tourism destinations including Sukhothai, Phetchabun, Uttaradit and Tak, the Transport Ministry said on Monday.
Officials said stronger air links could support tourism in secondary cities, distribute income to regional economies and improve connectivity. AEROTHAI has been instructed to upgrade air traffic management systems and deploy technology suited to regional airports as flight demand grows.
Phitsanulok Airport currently handles an average of 1,838 flights a month, comprising 1,139 military flights, or 62%, and 699 civilian flights, or 38%. Commercial services total five flights a day, with three operated by Thai AirAsia and two by Thai Lion Air.
AEROTHAI also plans to introduce the country’s first Aerodrome Flight Information Service, or AFIS, at Phrae and Phetchabun airports by 2028. The technology-based system is designed for lower-traffic airports and is intended to improve airspace management, reduce staffing requirements and serve as a model for regional airport development.
