Nam Phong residents attend 1st public hearing of Nam Phong Power Plant Replacement Project in Khon Kaen Province

EGAT expresses its appreciation to 1,017 Khon Kaen residents attending the 1st public hearing of the Replacement Project of Nam Phong Power Plant and giving 26 verbal comments, showing public participation in the project operation. All comments and concerns will be considered to determine the framework for studying and conducting the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
On September 29, 2019, Mr. Supachai leekhaosung, District Chief of Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen Province presided over the 1st public hearing of the Replacement Project of Nam Phong Power Plant, held at 50th Year Anniversary Meeting Hall, Nam Phong Suksa School, Wang Chai Subdistrict, Nam Phong District, khon Kaen Province, together with 1,017 people including local administration executives, community leaders, educational institutions joining in the forum in which 26 people delivering verbal comments.
The District Chief of Nam Phong District said that having been together with Khon Kaen Province for 30 years, Nam Phong Power Plant is an important power source of the Northeastern contributing to the development of businesses, services, economy and industries; electricity thereby is essential. At present Nam Phong Power Plant is going to be decommissioned from the power system due to expiry of service life, resulting in absence of overall generating capacity of the Northeastern. To ensure the electrical security of the region, EGAT therefore develops the Replacement Project of Nam Phong Power Plant. In the public hearing, the participants came from 2 districts including 4 Subdistricts of Nam Phong District which were Muang Wan, Kut Nam Sai, Sa-at and Nam Phong Subdistricts, and 2 Subdistricts of Ubonrat District which were Khok Sung and Bandong Subdistricts, along with related government agencies and stakeholders, reflecting participation of the locals in the project operation.
Mr. Somluck Petcharoen, EGAT Assistant Governor – Power Plant Planning, said that the Replacement Project of Nam Phong Power Plant is a combined cycle power plant using natural gas as main fuel and diesel oil as supplementary fuel, with a generating capacity of 650 MW. The Replacement Project will be constructed in the same area of the existing Power Plant at Kut Nam Sai Subdistrict Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen Province, to replace the Nam Phong Power Plant, Blocks 1-2 which will be decommissioned from the power system in 2025.
Ms. Duangkamol Promsuwan, Project Manager of Consultants of Technology Co., Ltd., as the advisory company, revealed that the public hearing is organized to declare the purpose, background and details of Nam Phong Power Plant and to hear comments, suggestions and concerns on the project proposal, project description, study scope and project assessment in order to determine the project framework and environmental assessment guideline and to conduct the EIA report, comprehensively.
