Deputy Transport Minister Sanphet Bunyamanee says he is pushing for a 5-billion-baht cruise terminal on Koh Samui in the southern province of Surat Thani, with a targeted completion date in 2032.
The Songkhla MP for the Bhumjaithai Party said he intended to present the project in detail to the cabinet within this year. The Marine Department would finish an environmental and health impact study within the next year and the government would invite the private sector to co-invest in the project, he added.
Phuket and Pattaya are also seen as additional potential locations for the construction of cruise terminals, according to the minister.
Large cruise ships call at Koh Samui regularly but they must anchor offshore. Passengers are taken ashore via smaller tender boats, typically arriving at Nathon Pier on the island’s west coast. The ride takes 15–20 minutes.
Mr Sanphet said he also wanted to attract more tourists to his home province of Songkhla by sea, but there are no locations to accommodate large vessels. Instead, he is proposing a new port for tender boats that would travel back and forth from cruise liners.
The southern province is known for its old town areas that should be listed as World Heritage sites and become tourist attractions, he said.
Mr Sanphet, 36, is the son of Niphon Bunyamanee, a longtime Democrat Party heavyweight and former head of the Songkhla provincial administrative organisation.
The family quit the Democrats last year to join Bhumjaithai.
