Bangkok’s new Pink Line to open for free during November 2023

The MRT Pink Line monorail from Khae Rai to Minburi will open for free rides this month, with commercial operations expected to start in December, according to the government.

Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote said trial runs on the new line are “99.99% complete”, with progress details to be presented to the Cabinet this month.

Bangkok’s second monorail stretches 34.5 kilometres between Nonthaburi and Minburi, linking the capital’s northern and eastern suburbs.

The Pink Line has 30 stations and connects to the Purple Line at Nonthaburi Civic Station, the Red Line at Lak Si, and the Green Line at Wat Phra Sri Maha That.

Fares to be charged from December are expected to range from 15 to 45 baht.

The Rail Department projects a daily ridership of 70,000-80,000 during the free period and 50,000-60,000 once commercial operations begin.

Surapong confirmed that the government was still planning to roll out a flat fare of 20 baht across all Bangkok rail lines within two years and was negotiating with private operators.
