Bangkok orders fire access cleared at 50 high-rise buildings after safety inspections

Bangkok has ordered owners of 50 high-rise buildings to remove obstructions blocking fire engine access after inspections found areas surrounding the buildings were being used in ways that violate building safety regulations.
The move follows concerns raised by the Thailand Consumers Council (TCC), which identified 50 condominium projects that may not comply with legal requirements for six-metre-wide access roads around high-rise buildings.
The council said it had previously submitted the list to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and called for stricter enforcement, warning that some projects still failed to comply despite developers claiming corrective work had been completed.
Under Thai law, buildings taller than 23 metres, with more than eight storeys or a floor area exceeding 10,000 square metres, must maintain six-metre-wide roads around the building to allow emergency vehicles access.
Deputy Bangkok Governor Wisanu Subsompon said inspections found most violations were caused by owners using the required access areas for landscaping, tree planting, parking or building extensions, which could prevent fire engines from reaching buildings during emergencies. He said City Hall had ordered owners to restore the areas to comply with safety standards.
Of the 50 buildings inspected, 12 have completed the required corrections, 34 are still making improvements and four remain under construction. The BMA said it is also inspecting other building safety standards and has instructed the Public Works Department and all district offices to closely monitor outstanding cases until all deficiencies are rectified.
