Vietnam’s high-speed 1,541 kilometers North-South railway connecting Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City to begin construction in December 2027
Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has announced that construction of the high-speed North-South railway will begin in December 2027, with completion expected by 2035.
The Ministry of Transport has finalized a comprehensive plan to begin construction of Vietnam’s high-speed North-South railway in December 2027, according to Nguyen Tri Duc, Chief of Office at the ministry.
A roadmap for implementation
Speaking to the media on January 21, Nguyen Tri Duc outlined the steps to expedite the project.
The Ministry’s plan includes selecting consultants, preparing and approving the feasibility study report, and conducting bidding for construction packages. The Government is currently reviewing a draft resolution to establish key project milestones and define the responsibilities of various ministries, localities, and agencies.
Special policies and mechanisms are also under consideration to ensure the project’s smooth execution.
The North-South high-speed railway will span approximately 1,541 kilometers, connecting Ngoc Hoi Station in Hanoi with Thu Thiem Station in Ho Chi Minh City.
The route will pass through 20 provinces and cities, featuring 23 passenger stations at intervals of 50–70 kilometers and five freight stations integrated with logistics hubs.
The project will involve constructing a new double-track railway with a 1,435mm gauge, a design speed of 350 km/h, and a maximum axle load of 22.5 tons.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Danh Huy estimated the project’s total investment at over $67 billion, funded entirely through the state budget. The financing is planned over 12 years, averaging $5.6 billion annually.
Phased construction timeline
The construction will be carried out in phases:
2027: Work begins on the Hanoi-Vinh and Nha Trang-Ho Chi Minh City sections.
2028: Construction starts on the Vinh-Nha Trang section.
2035: Completion of the entire railway.
This railway is expected to play a critical role in meeting transportation needs, supporting national logistics and defense, and contributing to Vietnam’s economic growth.
