Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has been appointed to lead a government committee tasked with studying the proposed Land Bridge project within a 90‑day timeframe, according to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Mr Anutin said on Monday the updated plan reflects shifting geopolitical dynamics and is intended to align Thailand’s infrastructure strategy with current global realities.
Speaking at the Bhumjaithai Party’s headquarters after the party’s weekly meeting, he said that a previous study of the Land Bridge project was done based on a different context from the current world’s situation.
At that time, Mr Anutin said there was no conflict in the Strait of Hormuz or talk of charging vessels travelling through the Strait of Malacca, as floated recently by Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.
So it’s very important, he said, that the country adopt a self-sufficient strategy to minimise any impact as much as possible.
In light of the world’s changing circumstances, he said the Land Bridge should not be considered solely from a cargo perspective, as it might not be worth investing in. But it should consider other aspects that could be an offset.
“We don’t have fuel, but we have food security. So we need to establish new pathways to strengthen self-reliance as much as possible and to reduce the impact of various factors that may arise in the future,” Mr Anutin said.
The prime minister said the committee to study the proposed Land Bridge project includes representatives from related agencies, but did not provide further details. He said he is confident that the committee can effectively inform the public on how the project will benefit the country. “Opposition is normal, but it should be done based on correct information,” he said.
Mr Anutin was responding to findings from a new survey by Nida Poll, as well as concerns raised by a number of non-governmental organisations and local communities over the proposed megaproject.
The poll, titled “What do southerners think about the land bridge project?”, found that among 1,333 respondents who had some awareness of the plan, 67.22% expressed support — 34.21% strongly and 33.01% moderately — while 32.78% opposed it.
However, more than half of respondents, or 54.53%, said they had only a limited understanding of the project, highlighting the need for clearer and more consistent public communication.
Speaking ahead of the weekly meeting of MPs from the Bhumjaithai Party on Monday, Mr Anutin declined to confirm whether the issue would be tabled at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
When asked about potential protests by southern residents planning to submit petitions opposing the project, he said the government was expediting the formation of the study panel to ensure the project reflects current realities. He did not directly respond to questions about the scale of local opposition before heading into the meeting.
Opposition from civil society groups has centred on environmental risks, the potential disruption to traditional livelihoods, and broader questions about the project’s necessity.
Community networks across several southern provinces have indicated plans to formally submit objections to MPs representing 14 provinces, signalling growing unease on the ground.
