Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has not studied proposed land bridge project

Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), said the agency has never conducted a formal study on the proposed land bridge project, clarifying that earlier findings cited in public debate referred instead to the Thai Canal, also known as Kra Canal.
He said NESDC’s work during the administration of former prime minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha focused on a preliminary assessment of the Thai Canal, which concluded the project would not be economically viable.
That study also compared the canal with a land bridge and the Southern Economic Corridor.
The canal offered the lowest returns, followed by the land bridge, which would require high investment and yield limited benefits without supporting industrial development.
The Southern Economic Corridor, which includes industrial zones, was found to provide greater economic value.
Danucha said the viability of the land bridge now being pursued by the government would depend on its design, investment model and whether it is integrated with industrial development.
He added that Thailand currently lacks a major export-oriented deep-sea port on its western coast, suggesting that developing a port in Ranong could strengthen trade links to India, the Middle East and Europe.
However, he said it is too early to conclude whether the land bridge project would be economically worthwhile, as key details remain under study.
