Thailand’s and Malaysia’s LOTUS’S (grr!) supermarkets – LOTUS’ surely!

In 2021, Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) announced the name change of its Tesco stores in Thailand and Malaysia to Lotus’s .

Lotus’s (formerly known as Lotus Supercenter, Tesco Lotus Supercenter and Tesco Lotus) is a retail chain in Thailand founded and operated by Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, with operations in Malaysia following the acquisition of Tesco Malaysia in 2020.

Based upon Ms. Mason’s English class that I attended in the late 1960’s/70’s it should be spelled Lotus or  Lotus’, but it seems that Lotus’s is also acceptable – but not with me though, every time I see Lotus’s I cringe. I’ve had several years now to get used to it, but I can’t, too old-school maybe.

While I was in my local branch of Lotus’s (grr!) the other day, I spotted these signs for:

“Meat’s” and “Fruits and Veggie’s”.

God give me strength!

The Lotus supermarket (Thai and Malaysian versions) – it should be spelled Lotus!

In 2021, Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) announced the renaming of Tesco stores in Thailand and Malaysia to Lotus.

Lotus (formerly known as Lotus Supercenter, Tesco Lotus Supercenter, and Tesco Lotus) is a retail chain in Thailand established and managed by the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group. It also has branches in Malaysia after acquiring Tesco Malaysia in 2020.

From my English lessons with Mr. Mason in the late 1960s/70s, it should have been spelled ‘Lotus’, but it seems ‘Lotus’s’ is also acceptable – but for me, every time I see ‘Lotus’s’ I feel uncomfortable. I’ve had years to get used to it, but I still can’t. Maybe it sounds too old-fashioned.

The other day, while I was at my local Lotus store (annoying!), I saw these signs:

“Meat” and “Vegetables and Fruits”

Oh my God!
