Thailand Approves Dutch Embassy Property Sale, New Residence Purchase

The cabinet has approved two draft exchanges of notes between Thailand and the Netherlands covering the sale of the current Dutch embassy compound on Ploenchit Road and the purchase of a new ambassadorial residence on Soi Ruamrudee, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana on Tuesday.
The Netherlands plans to sell the nearly 20-rai embassy and residence compound in Bangkok’s Pathumwan district and use the proceeds to acquire a new residence for the Dutch ambassador and lease replacement office space for the embassy, in line with current diplomatic needs and economic conditions.
The new property consists of two plots covering 375.2 square wah on Soi Ruamrudee, also in Pathumwan district, to be used as the new ambassadorial residence.
Under the agreements, both countries would grant reciprocal exemptions on taxes, duties and related fees for diplomatic property transactions.
The Netherlands also confirmed Thailand would receive similar treatment if it sought to sell or acquire diplomatic property in the country.
Thai authorities said the new site is suitable for diplomatic use, with no major legal or security concerns.
The Foreign Ministry and the Council of State determined the agreements qualify as international agreements under Section 178 of the constitution but do not require parliamentary approval.
They will take effect once signed by the foreign minister. Lalida said the move complies with international law and diplomatic reciprocity principles while strengthening Thai–Dutch relations.
