Two senators on Tuesday demanded that contractor Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction take responsibility for flooding and structural problems at Thailand’s parliament complex, a 23-billion-baht building whose warranty is due to expire in July.
Senators Nantana Nantavaropas and Sunthorn Pruksapipat said repeated attempts over the past one year and nine months to raise concerns about leaks and other defects had been discouraged by parliamentary officials, with staff allegedly calling lawmakers to ask them not to discuss the issue.
Nantana questioned whether the issue had been kept quiet because of the contractor’s alleged ties to the government, saying the parliament building had become unsafe due to recurring flooding, leaking roofs and fears of ceiling collapses.
Sunthorn, an architect, said the problems stemmed from substandard construction rather than rainwater or debris as claimed by some officials.
He also raised concerns over safety systems, including fire escape stairways and inadequate lighting.
The senators urged parliament administrators to accelerate repairs before the warranty expires and called for greater transparency over the building’s defects.
