Taking the LEED: Bangkok’s Sindhorn Village recognised for pioneering construction in Thailand
The mixed-use hotel and residential development in the heart of Bangkok received certification for its commitment to sound environmental practices and the promotion of quality of life within all its premises.
Siam Sindhorn has announced it has successfully incorporated criteria for all properties in the Sindhorn Village Project to gain certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The first time a Thai company has achieved the organisation’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation.
The Sindhorn Village Project, comprising Sindhorn Residence, Sindhorn Tonson, Sindhorn Lumpini, The Residences at Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, Baan Sindhorn, Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Hotel and Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok, is one of the largest mixed-use development in Southeast Asia.
Located on a 42 Rai estate in the centre of Bangkok, Sindhorn Village Project was awarded the internationally recognised green seal of approval due to the environmentally friendly choices made during construction, including sustainable design and energy-saving building materials. As a result, occupants can be confident of a higher quality of living as well as considerable savings on expenses.
One example of the innovations used in the buildings is the three-layered glass designed to prevent excessive intrusion from heat, ultraviolet light and external noise, creating an atmosphere that is both conducive to healthy living and energy efficiency. The design uses open space and allows natural light to flood in, reducing the need for artificial lighting and heating, as well as providing attractive views of the surrounding area.
Each unit has also been tested for its indoor air quality (IAQ) to limit PM10, Formaldehyde, TVOCs, and Carbon Monoxide to levels that meet the LEED standard. The required amount of fresh air needed has been calculated to comply with ASHRAE 62.1 so that every room is filled with clean air essential for healthy living.
Another direct benefit of LEED buildings, apart from lower operating costs, such as a 10% saving on energy use and a 20% decrease in water consumption, is the 30-40% reduction in CO2 emissions due to green zones, material selection and improved energy efficiency. These attributes add value to the area but also make the payback period of LEED buildings shorter than conventional ones.
