“The Implementation and Development of Remote Controlled and Autonomous Equipment in a modern Container Terminal” By Richard Green, M.Sc., D.I.C., C.Eng., M.I.C.E., M.I.H.T.

Hutchison Ports (Thailand) Ltd. has implemented the use of remote controlled Quay Cranes and Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (e-RTGC) in its Terminal D development in Laemchabang Thailand. Six quay cranes and twenty electrically powered e-RTGCs have successfully completed commissioning tests and are now in full operation. Six Autonomous Head Trucks are currently undergoing trials in Phase 1 of the Terminal D Development with a view to implementing this technology in the next Phase of Development at Terminal D.

Richard is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 40 years’ experience in Site Supervision, Contract Administration and Project Management. Since 1981, Richard has worked in the Far East, initially engaged on infrastructure projects, supervising the construction of road and bridge works and multi-story buildings in Hong Kong and road and bridge works in Indonesia, Philippines and Sri Lanka. Since 2000, Richard has concentrated on Container Port Development projects in Indonesia, Egypt and currently in Thailand in the role of Project Manager for one of the world’s leading container terminal operators. Between 1993, and 2016 Richard was actively engaged in the Institution of Civil Engineers in Indonesia holding positions of Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and latterly as Chairman of the Jakarta Local Association of the I.C. E.
