A new train line project connecting Suphan Buri and Ayutthaya has taken shape as the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) hosted the first meeting to take in impressions from people along the route.
Atthaphon Kaoprasert, chief engineer of Special Projects and Construction, an SRT unit, said in the opinion-gathering meeting in Suphanburi on Thursday that the new route would improve rail services and reduce logistics costs between southern destinations and the northern and northeastern regions.
The proposed track is to start from Bang Pla Ma district in Suphan Buri and proceed to Pachi district in Ayutthaya. The route passes eight districts in three provinces, including Ang Thong, for 74 kilometres. For 65 kilometres of the Ayutthaya-Ang Thong stretch, the line will be above ground due to passing through water retention areas. The intent of the rail is to connect existing main tracks to the southern, northern and northeastern regions, with no need to travel via Bangkok.
Mr Atthaphon said the meeting presented the project in detail, including the locations where the tracks would possibly be laid and impacts on the environment.
Two more meetings will be held in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya for the same purpose.
The SRT said it expected the project to be ready for the cabinet to consider in 2028 following environmental impact assessments.

เส้นทางที่เสนอจะเริ่มต้นจากอำเภอบางปลามา จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ไปยังอำเภอภาชี จังหวัดอยุธยา เส้นทางนี้ผ่าน 8 อำเภอใน 3 จังหวัด รวมถึงจังหวัดอ่างทอง เป็นระยะทาง 74 กิโลเมตร โดยในเส้นทางอยุธยา-อ่างทองนั้น 65 กิโลเมตรจะเป็นทางยกระดับเนื่องจากผ่านพื้นที่กักเก็บน้ำ จุดประสงค์ของการสร้างทางรถไฟสายนี้คือการเชื่อมต่อเส้นทางหลักที่มีอยู่ไปยังภาคใต้ ภาคเหนือ และภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ โดยไม่ต้องผ่านกรุงเทพฯ
