Cambodia has pushed back any official announcements regarding the budget and breaking ground on the Phnom Penh subway system until the master feasibility study concludes in 2027.
In 2025, Cambodia announced it had launched a feasibility study into developing a public metro system in Phnom Penh to ease the mounting congestion and connect major hubs. However, since then there has been a lack of updates from the government.
Kiripost contacted Phan Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, for an update. He responded that to date, the inter-ministerial technical team and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) experts have inspected key strategic locations in the city to determine priority routes.
“Those include major transportation corridors, Phnom Penh railway station and connections to Techo International Airport, which is a key logistics hub. Also, to date, we and relevant institutions have not yet determined a specific year for the groundbreaking of the metro system project in Phnom Penh.”
The ministry was also unable to provide the estimated cost for the project. Rim said, “In cooperation with the AIIB, it will be precisely determined only after the full feasibility study is officially completed.”
However, Rim confirmed that the study would be finished by 2027, when more details would be announced.
Socio-economic analyst, Chey Tech, said a metro system would help urban development, modernise Cambodia, attract more investors, and boost tourism and the economy.
He added that it can be built under a Build Operate and Transfer deal, as has been done with the expressway.
