The government plans to revive the Prayut-era Chana industrial estate and a proposed second deep-sea port in Songkhla, arguing that the existing port has reached capacity and cannot accommodate larger vessels.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said on Tuesday that the project was not new because it had received Cabinet approval under former prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. However, he did not mention that the Prayut government later halted it pending a strategic environmental assessment following sustained protests by local residents.
Residents have raised concerns about pollution, damage to fisheries and livelihoods, land-use changes and inadequate public participation. Phiphat did not explain whether the assessment had been completed or how the government would address those concerns.
Phiphat said the existing port at Hua Khao Daeng could not expand or be dredged to a depth of nine metres, preventing large vessels from docking.
He said a new port in Chana would stimulate the economy of the three southern border provinces and create local jobs, while urging opposition parties and NGOs to base their objections on evidence.
