Malaysia and Thailand to promote use of rubberwood

Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to promote the use of rubberwood by sharing information relating to the regional and international markets for rubberwood products.

Earlier in 2010, the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council (MFPC), Thai Parawood Association and Wood Processing Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the Malaysia-Thailand Parawood Committee (MTPC).

The chairmanship and secretariat of the MTPC will be rotated between various parties in Malaysia and Thailand.

Malaysia has exported wood and timber products, which include sawnwood, plywood, wooden furniture and particleboard, worth RMB522.8 million ($78.9 million) to Thailand in 2009.

Malaysia‘s rubberwood plantations spread over 1.02 million hectares while Thailand has a rubberwood plantation area of 2.6 million hectares.
