Thailand’s Rural Roads Department is due to sign a construction contract on 31 August 2026 for a bridge linking Koh Lanta with the Krabi mainland. The project is scheduled to take 1,080 days, with the new crossing expected to open in 2029.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced the timetable during a visit to Krabi on 23 August 2026, accompanied by Deputy Transport Minister Sanpetch Boonyamanee and senior transport officials.
The bridge is intended to remove the present travel constraints caused by the vehicle ferry service between Koh Lanta and the mainland. Officials said it will support more than 10,000 vehicles a day when operational.
A fixed link to replace ferry constraints
At present, vehicles, freight and passengers rely on a car ferry, which has limitations on operating times and capacity. The system can become particularly congested during the tourist high season and public holidays, when traffic volumes rise.
The planned bridge will begin at Highway 4206 on the mainland in Koh Klang subdistrict, cross Khlong Chong Lat and join rural road KB.5035 on Koh Lanta Noi.
It will include a bridge of about 1,780 metres and approximately 747 metres of connecting road, making the overall project around 2.5km long. The route will have two traffic lanes.
The main span is to use a cable-stayed design combined with a balanced cantilever bridge. Its architectural details will draw on Krabi identities, including the mast of a Chinese junk and crossed swords, with the bridge intended to become a provincial landmark.
Officials said the fixed link should also improve freight movements, emergency medical transfers and evacuation options during disasters. These are areas where a ferry crossing can create delays, particularly when demand is high.
Krabi transport plans extend beyond the bridge
Phiphat said Krabi’s development should be viewed as one connected transport network, covering the airport, roads, public transport, ports, islands and major visitor sites.
He instructed the Highways Department and Rural Roads Department to maintain and improve both main and secondary routes serving tourist areas, while coordinating investment plans across agencies.
During the meeting, local residents and MPs also urged the province and tourism sector to develop Khlong Thom as a spa destination. The district has natural attractions including saltwater hot springs, a hot waterfall, the Emerald Pool, historical learning sites and an ancient bead museum.
The proposal is to connect these sites into one route while developing health, spa and quality tourism services. Supporters said this could encourage longer stays and visitor spending, while spreading income beyond Krabi’s main tourism areas to local communities and businesses.
