Authorities are considering the demolition of allegedly illegal structures at Phuket’s Big Buddha site after forestry officials found violations of 17 of 21 permit conditions attached to the landmark’s operations.
Officials said complaints have been filed over alleged encroachment and unauthorized construction on more than five rai of land, with the case now awaiting a final ruling.
Authorities indicated the case could follow a similar path to the Freedom Beach encroachment dispute, where illegal structures faced demolition.
The Big Buddha site was closed following a deadly landslide in August 2024 that killed 13 people and reopened in March 2026 under new management.
The landmark remains open to visitors while investigations continue.
The issue was discussed during a visit by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to Phuket, where officials also reviewed land encroachment cases involving Sirinat National Park.
The ministry ordered Department of National Parks legal officers to appeal prosecutors’ decisions not to indict suspects in 28 encroachment cases involving the park.
Officials said 113 encroachment cases were recorded in the Sirinat area between 2012 and 2025, with 75 still under police investigation and 28 dropped by prosecutors.
Authorities also reviewed 13 Department of Special Investigation (DSI) cases involving alleged illegal land titles and encroachment linked to resort and tourism developments within the national park.
