Bangkok has initiated the building of a huge drainage tunnel, with 17% of the construction already done. In time it is intended to drain flood water from many of the main roads in Bangkok.

Bangkok Governor, MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said after monitoring the progress of construction of the drainage tunnel, being built from Ratchadapisek Road to Lat Phrao canal, and running along Bang Sue canal to meet the Chao Phraya River at Wat Kaew Fah in the Kiak Kai area of Dusit district, that it would drain water from major roads including Phahon Yothin between Saphan Khwai to Lat Phrao junction, Vibhavidi Rangsit, Ratchadapisek, Samsen, Lat Phrao and Kamphaengphet.

He added that this huge tunnel is able to drain water at 60 million cubic meters per sec., and handle rainfall of more than 60 mm per hour.

Construction is now at the 17% mark, and its expected that the drill string will be inserted into the tunnel by the middle of September.
