Ch. Karnchang, the country’s second-largest contractor, has won the right to build the Green Line extension of the BTS SkyTrain.

The company bid 2.46 billion baht inclusive of VAT to build rail systems for the 12.6-km rail line from Soi Baring to Samut Prakan, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) assistant governor said on Wednesday..

The winning bid was about 60 million baht higher than the median price of 2.40 billion baht, said Peerayuth Singpatanakul.

The figure beat the 2.62 billion baht bid by Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction and the 2.71 billion baht bid by Italian-Thai Development.

Mr Peerayuth said the MRTA committee would scrutinise Ch. Karnchang’s proposal and try to negotiate with the company to bring its proposed price down within the scope of the median price.

”According to regulations, the maximum price for the MRTA to hire a contractor is 10 per cent above the median price, but in practice, we will try to negotiate for the lowest price,” Mr Peerayuth said.

The MRTA expects to sign a contract in the first quarter of next year.

In June last year, Ch. Karnchang won the bid to build rail line and other facilities for the BTS Green Line extension project. It offered 14.14 billion baht which was about 22.8 million baht lower than the median price of 14.16 billion baht.
