A Simple and Practical Guide to Renewing a ‘Support Thai Wife (Marriage)’ Extension of Stay in Thailand

Once a year, the day arrives that my wife and I both dread. It is the day we have to visit our local immigration office to apply for a new one-year extension of stay based on supporting a Thai wife, commonly referred to by most foreigners in Thailand as a “Marriage Visa”.

I have been renewing Thai visas and extensions for more than thirty years. Initially, I held Non-Immigrant B “Business” extensions before later changing to the Non-Immigrant O (“Support Thai Wife”) extensions. Over the years I have dealt with changing immigration offices, evolving regulations, increasing documentation requirements and countless forms.

The process is not especially difficult, but it can be stressful if you arrive not fully prepared. This guide is based on my own experiences of applying for Non-Immigrant O “Support Thai Wife” extensions and is intended to help others successfully renew their annual extension with the minimum amount of confusion and frustration.

Please note that immigration requirements can change, and individual immigration offices may have slightly different procedures or document requirements. Always check with your local immigration office before submitting an application.

The former Bangkok Immigration Office in Soi Suan Phlu served generations of expatriates before operations moved to Chaeng Wattana in 2009

A Brief Look Back

When I first started extending my permission to stay in Thailand, applications were handled at the Immigration Office in Soi Suan Phlu, off South Sathorn Road in Bangkok. The facilities were basic, parking was limited and paper files seemed to be stacked up everywhere. However, there were far fewer foreigners living in Thailand at that time, so the office never appeared as busy as the immigration offices we see today.

Bangkok Immigration’s move to the Government Complex at Chaeng Wattana brought significantly larger facilities but also much longer journeys for many applicants.

Around 2009, Bangkok Immigration moved to the Government Complex at Chaeng Wattana. At roughly the same time, applicants became required to attend the immigration office responsible for their local area. In my case, this meant no longer travelling into Bangkok and instead visiting the Immigration Office along the Chaophya river front in Samut Prakan.

A Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) visa is issued for family-related purposes such as marriage to a Thai national, being the parent of a Thai child, guardianship and certain retirement situations. The visa itself generally grants an initial stay, while the annual extension of stay provides permission to remain in Thailand for a further year.

Foreigners aged over 50 can apply for a retirement extension, which currently requires either THB 800,000 in a personal Thai bank account or evidence of monthly income of THB 65,000 meeting immigration requirements. However, retirement extensions do not permit employment. As I continued working in Thailand after turning 50, I chose to remain on annual Support Thai Wife extensions because they permit the holder to obtain a Work Permit.

Before You Begin

If possible, visit your local immigration office several days before your intended application date and obtain the latest versions of all forms required. Immigration offices occasionally change forms or procedures, and obtaining them in advance reduces stress on application day.

You may wish to obtain forms relating to:

  • Extension of Stay application
  • Re-entry Permit application
  • 90-Day Reporting

Remember that leaving Thailand without a valid Re-entry Permit automatically cancels your extension of stay.

Applying for annual Support Thai Wife extensions

The following explains the requirements and the process for applying for annual Support Thai Wife extensions.

Financial Requirements

There are two methods available.

Method 1 – THB 400,000 Bank Deposit

You must maintain THB 400,000 in your personal Thai bank account. The account must be solely in your name and not a joint account.

The funds must:

  • Be deposited at least two months before the application date.
  • Remain in the account throughout the 30-day “Under Consideration” period.

For the remainder of the year, the balance may fall below THB 400,000.

Method 2 – THB 40,000 Monthly Income

You must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of THB 40,000 paid into your personal Thai bank account for the previous 12 months.

Evidence may include:

  • Embassy income certification (where available), or
  • Bank letter and supporting statements showing the monthly transfers.

I personally use the THB 400,000 bank deposit method and therefore cannot comment extensively on the income method.

Financial Requirements Summary

Monthly Income MethodTHB 40,000 per month for previous 12 monthsEmbassy income letter or bank statements

Bank Documents Required

If using the THB 400,000 method, obtain:

  • Bank confirmation letter
  • Three-month bank statement
  • Copies of every page of your bank book

In Samut Prakan, obtaining these documents in the days before application has been acceptable. However, some immigration offices require them to be issued on the actual day of application, so check local requirements.

Documentation Requirements

A few simple rules can save a lot of trouble:

  • Always use blue ink when completing forms and signing documents.
  • Use black-and-white photocopies unless instructed otherwise.
  • Prepare two complete document sets.
  • Organise documents in the order below – your immigration officer will arrange them in the order he or she requires.

Typical document categories include:

  • Application forms
  • Passport and passport copies
  • Marriage documents
  • Wife’s ID card and House Registration Book
  • Children’s documents (if applicable)
  • Landlord documents (if renting)
  • Map to residence
  • Family photographs
  • Banking documents
  • Fee receipt

Marriage Documents

If married in Thailand, you will generally be required to submit:

  • Marriage Certificate (Kor Ror 3)
  • Marriage Registration Entry (Kor Ror 2)

If married overseas, your marriage documents must normally be translated, certified and registered in Thailand. A Kor Ror 22 document will also be required.

A Kor Ror form can be obtained from your local district office before applying. Cost is THB 10 per copy.

Remember to take along your original marriage certificate as the immigration officer may wish to see it.

Wife’s Documents

Provide:

  • Thai National ID Card
  • House Registration Book (“Blue Book”)

Copy the front and the back of the Thai ID card on to a white A4 page.

Copy only the sections of the house book (“blue book”) that relate to your wife on to a white A4 page.

Children’s Documents

If you have children together, or have legally adopted your wife’s children, immigration requires supporting documentation every year.

This may include:

  • Birth certificates
  • Thai ID cards
  • House Registration records
  • Inclusion in family photographs

Copy the front and the back of the Thai ID card on to a white A4 page.

Copy only the sections of the house book (“blue book”) that relate to your child on to a white A4 page.

Many people will be surprised to learn that adult children are required to continue to be included in the annual application process, as follows:

  1. Child’s/Children’s details must be included in a Support Thai Wife application EVERY year. Children have to be in the photos of every application.
  2. Photos with Child’s/Children can be anytime in the year preceding the application (i.e. not necessary to do the family photos in the days leading up to the extension application)
  3. If adult child/children live separately from foreign parent, or if adult child/children is/are overseas, the adult child/children can do their own photos outside their residence for inclusion in the application, but they have to provide proof of where they live (i.e. such as rental agreement) in the application.

In summation, the need to provide child/children’s birth certificate, Thai ID, blue book pages and inclusion in your photos in your Support Thai Wife annual extension applications never stops as long as you apply for an extension on the basis of Support Thai Wife.

Landlord Documents

If you rent your home, immigration may require:

  • Landlord’s Thai ID card
  • House Registration Book
  • Rental Agreement

Copies should normally be signed by the landlord.

Map to Residence

A simple hand-drawn map is usually required.

Include:

  • Your address
  • Your phone number
  • Nearby well-known landmarks
  • Directions from a main road

The easier you make it for immigration officers to locate your home, the better.

Family Photographs

Immigration offices usually require photographs showing:

  • Applicant and family outside the residence
  • House number clearly visible
  • Applicant and family inside living room
  • Applicant and family inside parent’s bedroom

Some offices may request additional photographs.

In my case, because I live in a housing estate, immigration also requires a photograph showing my wife and me standing beside the estate entrance sign.

No more than two printed colour photos on each A4 paper.

Fee

The current application fee is THB 1,900.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Application Day

A few final suggestions:

  • Update your bank book immediately before attending immigration.
  • Take all original documents.
  • Take your wife with you.
  • Carry some cash for photocopying.
  • Allow more time than you think you will need.

The immigration officer will review your documents and may ask questions. Your wife will normally be asked several questions in Thai, often including how and where you first met.

Stay calm, polite and patient throughout the process. Immigration officers are simply doing their job and courtesy always helps.

If your application is accepted:

  1. You pay the THB 1,900 fee.
  2. A photograph is taken of you and your wife.
  3. Your passport receives a 30-day “Under Consideration” stamp.
  4. You receive instructions on when to return.

Days leading up to going to submit your extension application:

Ensure that you will have THB 400,000 in your personal bank account on or about the day when you intend to visit the immigration office to apply for your extension. You can apply for your extension no more than 30 days (believe it may be 45 days at Chaeng Wattana) before your existing extension expires. So if your existing extension expires on 15 October, you can visit the immigration office from 15 September, so have the THB 400,000 in your personal bank account say from early July.

Go visit your local immigration office (if reasonably close to where you reside) to get the necessary forms. If you live a distance away from the local immigration office you will have to fill in all the forms when you arrive at the office on the day of extension application, which adds to an already stressful visit.

Go get family photos prepared; glued on to white A4, no more than two photos per page. Add your Name to the top of the A4 pages.

Go get the banking details in the seven days leading up to the day of extension application. Even better if you get the banking details the day before the day of extension application.

Arrange all of your documentation in to two sets: one set should include any original documents (i.e. like the banking details, Kor Ror form, etc) and the other set is only copies. Clip the sets together with a bulldog clip.

Day of extension application

On the way to the immigration office, call in to a local bank and request that they update your bank book – you may want to deposit say THB 500 before the update. Once your bank book has been updated, do not forget to get two copies of the updated page to include in your 2 sets of documents.

Go to your local immigration office to apply.

Your wife must be with you.

I understand that some immigration may require a witness of your marriage to attend with you.

Immigration officer will go through the two sets of documents. Do not forget to take all originals (passport, Thai ID, etc., as the officer may request to see them); the officer will for sure want to see your bank book.

The officer may ask questions as he or she goes through your application documentation. Answer clearly and simply. Do not get upset, aggressive or annoyed as they are only doing their job. Keep calm at all times.

The immigration officer will ask your wife, in Thai, various questions and fill in an additional form that you cannot receive in advance, for example, my wife has been asked just about every year for several decades “where and when did you meet?”.

You will find that no matter what order you put your documentation in, the officer will no doubt rearrange the order.

You may find that you have to go and photocopy various pages, so have some small change available to pay for photocopying.

If all is in order and the application documentation is accepted by the officer, first you pay the 1,900 THB fee, then you and your wife will have your photo taken together, you will receive a receipt for the 1,900 THB fee you paid (immigration expects that you go get a photocopy of it for them to keep), your passport and application documentation will be taken away to a senior officer for the 30 days ‘Under Consideration’ stamp to be inserted into your passport, and then you will receive back your passport and be told to (i) return on the ‘Under Consideration’ date shown and (ii) informed that the balance in your personal bank account must not fall below THB 400,000 until you receive the actual extension stamp.

The 30-Day Under Consideration Period

During the 30 days ‘Under Consideration’ you may receive a visit from immigration police at your home / place of residence. The immigration police may require a witness or witnesses to be present at the home visit. Having never had a home visit I cannot offer further comment.

The 30 days ‘Under Consideration’ stamp works like this. Assuming existing extension expires on 15 October 2026, and you visited during the 30 days prior, so:

  • If you visited the immigration office on 16 September 2026, the 30 days ‘Under Consideration’ stamp will show 16 October 2026, you will return to the immigration office on 16 October 2026 with your passport (wife does not have to accompany you, and I believe wife may be able to go in your stead) and you will receive a new extension stamp for one year showing the date of expiry of 15 October 2027, or,
  • If you visited the immigration office on 14 October 2026, the 30 days ‘Under Consideration’ stamp will show 14 November 2026, you will return to the immigration office on 14 November 2026 with your passport and you will receive a new extension stamp for one year showing the date of expiry of 15 October 2027.

The important point to remember is that your new one-year extension will ultimately run from the expiry date of your current extension, not from the date you submitted your application. I would recommend applying for your extension as early as possible, and definitely do not leave it to the last minute to apply.

I understand that your wife does not have to accompany you when you return to get your new extension stamped into your passport, in fact I believe that your wife may be able to go in your stead.

Final Thoughts

Although the process can appear daunting when you first see the list of forms and supporting documents, renewing a Support Thai Wife extension becomes much more manageable once you understand what is required and organise your paperwork in advance.

After more than thirty years of annual extension renewals, my advice is simple: prepare early, check your documents carefully, keep copies of everything, remain patient and courteous, and be prepared for the unexpected. Immigration officers are simply carrying out their duties, and requirements and procedures can vary from one office—or even one year to the next.

That said, I would not pretend that good preparation makes the annual extension day stress-free. My wife and I have always dreaded it. We know from our own experience, and from talking to other people who go through the same process, that everyone considers  it to be extremely stressful and, frankly, not a particularly enjoyable outing.

You can prepare your documentation as carefully as possible, drawing on all the knowledge and experience you have accumulated over the years, but there is still an element that remains outside your control. Ultimately, the immigration officer has to review your application and decide whether everything is in order. Over the years, we have encountered officers who were extremely helpful and friendly, as well as others who were considerably less so.

Perhaps the most stressful part is the uncertainty. Even when you believe you have everything exactly as required, there may be a question, an additional document requested, or some other issue that you had not anticipated. When the application is finally completed, both my wife and I usually feel completely drained of energy—not because the process is necessarily difficult, but because of the tension and uncertainty that come with it.

But then comes the best part.

It has become something of a tradition for us that, once the annual extension is finally sorted out, we celebrate the fact that I have been granted “one more year in Thailand” with a nice bottle of wine in the evening.

So, while there is no magic formula for making the annual extension completely stress-free, being well prepared certainly helps. Hopefully, the information and experiences shared in this guide will make your next application a little easier, help you avoid some common pitfalls, and give you a better idea of what to expect.

And when it is finally over, do what we do: put the paperwork away, pour a glass of wine and celebrate one more year in Thailand.

Good luck!

(Marriage Visa)

(Re-entry Permit)
