Sixth Thai-Lao bridge between between Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani and Laos’ Salavanon on track following talks, design tweaks
The Department of Highways has confirmed that construction of the sixth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge is set to begin in 2029, following financing talks and design adjustments on the Lao side.
A department source said progress on the new bridge, linking Ubon Ratchathani with Salavan in Laos, has advanced after revisions to the project design. The total investment budget stands at 5.22 billion baht.
Authorities in Laos have tweaked the road design connecting the bridge to Route 13, expanding it from two lanes to four lanes in both directions to handle higher traffic volumes once the bridge opens.
The junction with Route 13 will also be redesigned as a roundabout, requiring further impact studies, particularly regarding additional land expropriation.
Laos has also requested financial help from Thailand for part of the main Mekong River bridge work, estimated at 185 million baht.
Currently, the Lao side is finalising its budget framework and plans to seek loans from the Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (Neda).
Once financing is agreed, the department will seek a budget allocation under the 2028 fiscal year before submitting the project to the cabinet.
Tendering and contract signing are expected to follow immediately, allowing work to start in 2029. The project will take about three years, with completion and opening planned for 2031.
The budget includes 5.06 billion baht for construction and 165 million baht for project supervision.
The bridge will span 1.6 kilometres with two traffic lanes, linking Thailand’s Highway 2112 in Na Tan district with Laos’ Route 13 in Lakhonepheng district.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to strengthen transport links between Ubon Ratchathani and Salavan, and support cross-border trade.
