One of Thailand’s leading steel companies, NS BlueScope (Thailand) Limited is working in partnership with the global Konecranes group to increase the productivity and efficiency of their busy plant in Rayong, while minimising downtime.

10 Electric Overhead Travelling (EOT) cranes with lifting capacities of up to 30t and SM or XL trolleys are installed to load and unload raw coil and pickle iron to supply to the metal coating line. One custom-engineered semi-gantry crane is installed outside the factory to assist in the storage, loading and unloading of steel coils.

NS BlueScope (Thailand) Limited part of the BlueScope Steel group, with extensive operations throughout Australasia, Oceania, North, South and South-east Asia and the USA. The company is responsible for manufacturing and supplying metallic coated and painted flat steel products with familiar proprietary names that include ZINCALUME®, Clean COLORBOND®, TRUZINC®, ZACS® steel, P-ZACS® steel, SHUTTEREX® steel and GALVASPAN™ steel.

“We’re incredibly busy at the moment,” explains Plant Services, Support and Admin Manager, Mr Peter De Gruyter, “We’re 100% loaded on all units, so we can’t afford any downtime. It’s times like these that we appreciate the reliability of our Konecranes units. We rarely experience any breakdowns, and if a service is needed, Konecranes are very fast to respond,” he says.

Konecranes has enjoyed a long, close relationship with NS BlueScope in Asia. “Not only were all the cranes supplied and installed on time, but the servicing and preventative maintenance team is always very responsive.” Mr De Gruyter said.

“I like the way Konecranes is open to our feedback and willing to make improvements based on our suggestions. Their reliability just keeps getting better and we’re experiencing the benefits of that here at NS BlueScope,” says Mr De Gruyter.

Most of the cranes at the Rayong plant are Konecranes units, but Mr De Gruyter explains that Konecranes do the servicing of all brands. “We’ve found Konecranes to have the fastest response time and have the reliability and engineering expertise we require. The regular preventative maintenance that we do helps to minimise downtime,” he says.

“The difference between service within a couple of hours and waiting until the next day is enormous. Konecranes have a service centre nearby, so we can always get same-day service,” he says.

Konecranes’ SM Spacemaker range of cranes combines excellent operating height and hook approaches with compact, lightweight construction. These characteristics produce substantial savings on building costs (up to 30% in many cases) and a maximum of work space.

The SM trolley features a totally enclosed transmission, with a low dead weight and low height requirement. It comes with hardened and ground gearing, which allow for longer life and quieter operation.
