Work begins on Vietnam’s $306-mln Sa Pa airport
Construction of an airport near Sa Pa town in the northern mountain province of Lao Cai began Thursday, the local people’s committee announced.
The airport coming up in Bao Yen District, less than two hours from the tourist town Sa Pa, will cost around VND7 trillion (US$306.5 million) and is being built by a public-private partnership.
When the second phase of the 371-ha airport is finished after 2028, it will have a capacity of handling three million passengers a year.
Around VND2.73 trillion will come from the government for land, relocation and infrastructure, while private investors will provide the rest.
Nguyen Trong Hai, deputy chairman of the Lao Cai People’s Committee, hailed the project as a breakthrough in transport infrastructure in Lao Cai and the midlands and mountainous regions of the north. It would help boost tourism and economic development, he added.
