Whatever happened to the ‘Society of Professional Engineers in Thailand’ (SPET)?
No SPET or Bangkok Lighthouse meetings, gap in the Bangkok market for a construction and engineering monthly gathering?
We received an enquiry recently, asking what happened to SPET?
If you type SPET in to the search box on Thailand Construction website ( https://thailand-construction.com/?s=spet ) you’ll see that we regularly used to post about SPET’s monthly meetings, and those posts stop with the Society Of Professional Engineers In Thailand (SPET) Meeting 26 November 2020 so presumably SPET’s meetings stopped due to Covid-19, but did they ever resume with their monthly meetings?
If you have any information on SPET can you let us know please at info AT qscthailand.com .
UPDATE 02.11.2025:
A couple of people got in touch – thank you Geoff and Matt – to advise that SPET started in 1976 and in 2012 had 70 active members (I remember going to a couple of their monthly chats at the British Club – ED). SPET meetings were stopped due to COVID, but also because a lot of the major infrastructure projects in Thailand no longer wanting less expat engineers, so the pool of expat engineering professionals was in decline .
Seems SPET hasn’t been reactivated since COVID, and with no Bangkok Lighthouse meetings, there does seem a gap in the Bangkok market for a construction and engineering monthly gathering.
