Vinci, a France-based commissions and construction company, will receive €94 million (US$102 million) for a 36-month contract to design and build an extension to a major Cambodian water treatment plant.

Serving Bakheng, in the north of the country’s capital of Phnom Pehn, the municipal water supply authority for the city commissioned the work to Vinci’s Construction Grands Projets (CGR) division.

Vinci will construct a new raw water intake from the nearby Mekong River and a new water line that can treat a capacity of 195,000m3 (255,050 cu yd) of H2O daily.

Once completed, the extension should supply clean drinking water to about 750,000 people.

The scheme is part of the Cambodian government’s programme to bring drinking water to the country’s entire population by 2030. The extension is expected to be operational by 2028.

“It follows on from the first two phases at the same plant – which currently supplies water to some two million people – [which were] handed over in June 2023 and March 2024,” added Vinci.

Vinci to employ local workforce, use sustainable tech
Vinci said, at the height of construction, the project will employ more than 1,600 labourers.

“A large majority of the workers and supervisors will be Cambodian, women are expected to account for 30% of the workforce, and Vinci CGR will train them in building trades,” said the company.

The company also highlighted its sustainable initiatives and technology to be used for the project.

“From an environmental perspective, Vinci CGR will: use concrete that emits 30% less carbon than standard local equivalents, set up a 3,500-panel (9,000m2) photovoltaic array to cover 15% of the facility’s energy requirements, and deploy Smart Users, an innovative solution developed by its subsidiary WMI, to measure and manage water consumption at the worksite and facilities (including offices and concrete plant),” said Vinci.
