Vietnam’s new Da Nang tunnel opens to ease traffic to city’s airport

A new tunnel opened in downtown Da Nang on Monday after two years of construction to reduce traffic congestion to and from the city’s airport.

The tunnel with skylights runs 950 meters long below Duy Tan Street from the intersection of Duy Tan and Le Dinh Tham streets to Tran Thi Ly Bridge that crosses the Han River in Hai Chau District.

Costing VND723 billion ($31.7 million), it spans 15.5 meters wide with two lanes in each direction.

Nguyen Minh Huy, director of the Management Board of Da Nang Traffic Construction Investment Projects, said the project will minimize traffic congestion during peak hours when vehicles enter and exit the wedding restaurant on Sep. 2 Street, creating a complete traffic axis connecting Da Nang International Airport and the port area.

The project will also reduce the load on main roads running past the public sea area in the east of the city, including Nguyen Van Linh and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, boosting service capacity at Da Nang airport while managing urban traffic in the city center.
