YANGON-Myanmar will be constructing a road that connects Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the border area with Thailand, says Dr Than Myint, Commerce Minister and Chairman of the Task Force on SEZ construction.

“Myanmar is now discussing about construction of road to Dawei SEZ with Thailand. We have conducted the survey for construction. Construction tasks for road will be start soon,” said Dr Than Myint.

A tripartite discussion with Myanmar, Thailand and Japan will be held in Myanmar regarding the Dawei Special Economic Zone.

“There was the original plan. Japan had submitted the suggestion. We are going to make adjustment after discussion at the tripartite meet. Japan had drawn the plan and then we are going to discuss with Thailand. We want t the original plan because it was drawn since 12 or 13 years ago. At present, the ground condition had changed. The Italian-Thai Company also can’t work. So, we are going to carry out the phases after discussing with Myanmar, Thai and Japan.Myanmar will form Joint Committee in the near future,” said Dr Than Myint.

As Thai government offers a reasonable loan to Myanmar for the construction a two-lane road from the Thai border area to the Dawei SEZ, an important first phase of the Dawei SEZ, the SEZ Management Committee had agreed to take out the loan from Thailand.

The Construction Ministry had carried out survey of the road axis together with the Thai Department of Highways.

The Information Ministry announced a statement saying that the construction of the road would bring benefits for the implementation of Dawei SEZ and would also create job opportunities for the locals.

Myanmar Special Economic Zone Central Committee formed Dawei SEZ Management Committee on October 12th in 2016 involving with 12 members from relevant ministries and foreign experts and Dr Tun Naing, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy acted as the chair of Management Committee.
