Airports Corporation of Vietnam says work on phase one of the Long Thanh International Airport should begin April 2021 based on current progress.
Saigon Times media quoted ACV outlining the legal procedures for terminal design bids for the project that will be developed in Long Thanh district.
ACV said the bids will be presented 8 August. The final design for the airport would be selected by this September.
inside no 4Selection of a consultant for the feasibility study will be open to international firms until November and the selection result will be announced next January, the report said.
The feasibility study will be presented, June to July 2018, before it is submitted to the government in August 2018. The State Assessment Council will then evaluate the study and forward to the National Assembly (NA) in the final quarter of 2018 for approval.
ACV reckoned that after the feasibility study is approved by the government another 18 more months would be needed to complete technical designs, investment estimates and selection of contractors.
Construction will not commence before 2021.
The Long Thanh airport project was approved by the National Assembly in June 2015. Once opened, the airport will be able to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of freight per year.
Long Thanh Airport, located in the southern Dong Nai province, is set to become the largest airport in Vietnam and will become a major gateway way in ASEAN competing head-on with Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
The airport will ultimately take over the lead role from Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport. But it is almost certain that there will be a long spell when both airports are fully operational until Long Thanh completes its second and third phases.
Tan Son Nhat handles around 20 million passengers a year and will be heavily congested by 2017, when passenger traffic could exceed the maximum capacity of 25 million.
