Thailand's steels itself for further arrests over dodgy substandard steel rods

Construction News

The Department of Special Investigation has found more factories producing substandard steel rods in Samut Prakan and seized more than 100 tonnes of their products yesterday.

DSI officers yesterday raided three steel trading firms in in Phra Samut Chedi district of Samut Prakan and found two of them stocked substandard steel bars.

DSI director-general Tarit Pengdith said his team raided Thai Inter Steel Co, Wai Wing Enterprise Co and Worapan Wipapan Co, and found that the first two companies had substandard steel bars in their warehouses.

Mr Tarit said a search at Thai Inter Steel Co found one tonne of substandard steel bars and a search at Wai Wing Enterprise Co, owned by a Taiwan national, Kawin Lor, at Suk Sawat Soi 48, led to about 100 tonnes of substandard steel bars worth about 27 million baht.

It did not find illegal steel products at Worapan Wipapan Co.

Mr Tarit said the bars were made from recycled steel supplied by scrap collectors.

“These illegal products are dangerous to society because those operators bought dilapidated steel from scrap collectors at low cost and hot-rolled it into substandard steel bars _ they broke easily,” Mr Tarit said.
