The Thai government has welcomed Bangkok being voted the best city in Asia for 2026, saying the recognition underscores Thailand’s strong potential as a global tourism destination.
Deputy government spokeswoman, Aiyarin Phanrit, said on Wednesday that the administration is pleased at the announcement made as part of Readers’ Choice Awards 2026 by DestinAsian magazine, a leading luxury travel and lifestyle publication in the Asia-Pacific region.
Bangkok picked up the award for a third year running, closely followed in the polls by Tokyo, according to the magazine.
The ranking is based on votes cast by readers of the magazine. In the Best Cities in Asia 2026 category, Tokyo placed second, followed by Singapore in third.
According to DestinAsian, Bangkok secured the top position due to four key strengths:

Bangkok was praised for its remarkable balance between deep-rooted cultural heritage and modern urban development. The city seamlessly combines iconic temples and traditional floating markets with world-class luxury shopping malls and soaring skyscrapers.

The capital’s welcoming atmosphere, often associated with Thailand’s reputation as the “Land of Smiles,’’ also played a key role in the ranking. Friendly service at all levels, from tuk-tuk drivers to staff at five-star hotels, helped Bangkok secure the top spot among readers across the Asia-Pacific region for several consecutive years.
“The latest ranking reinforced Thailand’s standing as a leading tourism destination. Bangkok remains one of the most popular cities in Asia, distinguished by its unique mix of ancient temples, bustling markets and tranquil scenery,’’ said the deputy government spokesman.
She added that historic landmarks such as the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Ratchawararam stand alongside vibrant street life, floating markets and lively areas such as Khao San Road, creating a dynamic urban landscape that offers visitors an experience akin to stepping into a cinematic journey.
