Thai Engineering Body Urges Urgent Reforms After Repeated Crane Collapses
Thailand’s structural engineers have called for urgent reforms to halt a series of construction accidents, warning that repeated collapses reflect serious failures in safety standards for public infrastructure projects.
The Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) said at least four launcher crane collapses have occurred since mid-2023, including incidents on the Lat Krabang–On Nut elevated road, Rama II Road, a high-speed rail project in Sikhio, and most recently again on Rama II Road on Jan 14–15.
Other construction-related incidents in recent years, including building collapses linked to earthquakes and sinkholes during subway construction, have heightened public safety concerns.
Professor Dr Amorn Pimanmas, president of the association, said all of the collapse incidents involved government projects and must be addressed at their root causes.
He proposed six measures, including an immediate suspension of public construction projects using launcher cranes in public areas, the establishment of independent and transparent investigations, and tougher criminal and civil penalties for those found responsible.
The association also called for stricter regulation of subcontracting practices, action against nominee arrangements involving foreign construction capital, and the introduction of a mandatory registration system for launcher cranes to prevent the use of unsafe or uncertified equipment.
Without swift legal and regulatory reforms, Amorn warned, Thailand risks continued construction failures and recurring threats to public safety.
