Thai-Chinese rail deal closer

A memorandum of understanding between the Thai and Chinese governments on a joint venture to construct the new high-speed train from Nong Khai to Bangkok is likely to be signed by the end of this year. Terms of the memo are expected to be discussed when the prime minister visits Shanghai this weekend.

Economic ministers gave the green light on Monday to state investment plans for four high-speed train routes: Nong Khai-Bangkok, Bangkok-Padang Besar, Bangkok-Rayong and Bangkok-Chiang Mai.

The cabinet has not approved a draft memo of the state investment plans for the four routes. It has instructed the Transport Ministry to prepare the draft and submit it later to the cabinet before tabling it for parliamentary approval.
