Thai Cabinet eyes Baht100bn in road projects
M8 motorway (Nakhon Pathom–Pak Tho–Cha-am), Hat Yai outer ring road, and, Bangkok Outer Ring Road (Eastern Section)
Three major road projects will be submitted to the new cabinet for consideration, with a combined investment exceeding 100 billion baht, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).
The department’s director-general, Piyapong Jiwatthanakulpaisan, said on Monday that the DoH would forward the proposals once the new cabinet has been sworn in.
He said the projects are crucial to easing traffic congestion, improving regional connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
The first project is the M8 motorway (Nakhon Pathom–Pak Tho–Cha-am), with Phase 1 covering 61km from Nakhon Pathom to Pak Tho at a cost of 54.5 billion baht. Mr Piyapong said the budget includes 14.4 billion baht for land acquisition and 40.1 billion baht for construction. The work will be carried out in two phases, with completion expected by 2033. Once operational, the route is expected to cut travel time from Nakhon Pathom to Wang Manao from 90 minutes to 30, significantly improving access to the South.
The second project is the Hat Yai outer ring road in Songkhla, covering 66.8km and costing 45.3 billion baht. Mr Piyapong said the DoH plans to incorporate water management measures, including a parallel drainage canal to help mitigate flooding. Construction will also be divided into two phases, with initial sections expected to open by 2035 and full completion by 2037.
The third project is the Bangkok Outer Ring Road (Eastern Section), a 13.6‑km stretch linking Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok Road to Lam Luk Ka Road. Mr Piyapong said that updated environmental and traffic impact studies are required due to overlapping routes with other expressway plans.
