Sumitomo Corporation hereby announces that Sumitomo in consortium with Black & Veatch (Thailand) Limited (BV) and Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited (ITD) has been awarded the contract for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of Chachoengsao 2 substation (500kV/230kV GIS) to be constructed in the Chachoengsao Province from Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).
The consortium was chosen as the most competitive in both commercial and technical aspects. The EPC contract of the Consortium is collectively worth almost JPY 4.2 billion. The substation will enter into a commercial operation in November 2018. Sumitomo, as a consortium leader, will be responsible for supplying of the 500kV/230kV GIS equipment. BV will be responsible for engineering and supplying other equipment. Overall civil and installation work will be carried out by ITD.
The average annual economic growth rate in Thailand is expected to be almost 4% for the period between 2014 and 2036. In consideration of the rising electric power demand, the government plans to double the electric generation capacity by 2030. It is an urgent subject to reinforce the power transmission and distribution equipment for a stable electric supply. This substation, as a part of extra-high voltage power transmission lines, will supply the electricity to the eastern area of Bangkok where there are many industrial parks and a large electric power demand. After the completion, this substation will contribute to the stable electric supply to the Bangkok area and the economic development in Thailand. In addition to that, the installation of the latest facilities will promote the high efficiency, save space and contribute to reduce the environmental load.
Thailand is one of the most important markets from the viewpoint of Sumitomo’s Southeast Asian marketing strategy. Sumitomo completed North Bangkok 2 combined cycle power plant in January 2016 and is executing a supply contract of 24 units of 500kV power transformers with EGAT. Moreover, Sumitomo has continued to positively expand the transmission and distribution businesses in other countries such as the Middle and Near East countries and in Africa. Since 2000, Sumitomo has won contracts whose total amount exceeds JPY 100 billion, especially in Bahrain, UAE and South Africa.
It is planed that many power plants and transmission and distribution equipment will be built around the world. Sumitomo will further expand its electric power infrastructure-related business, supply high efficient and high quality power and energy system with excellent environmental performance, and contribute to the economic development of the countries where they locate.
