Solar rooftop installations in Thailand ‘must be affordable’

The government’s push for solar rooftop installations must not burden citizens with debt but instead serve as a tool to reduce living costs and expand energy choices, says Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee.
Speaking yesterday about promoting residential solar cell installations, Mr Polapee said the government views clean energy as a key tool for improving people’s quality of life.
He said policies include support for rooftop solar systems, the promotion of electric vehicles, energy-saving campaigns and the development of smart power grids to address energy crises and rising energy costs. The government is also promoting changes to the energy sector to make it more sustainable.
He had told the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to explore ways to reduce costs related to electricity generation, installation systems and service fees. The goal is to make clean energy more accessible and affordable for citizens.
Mr Polapee also ordered both agencies to conduct in-depth studies on lowering electricity costs and reviewing solar rooftop installation fees so they can compete more effectively with private-sector providers.
Although the MEA and the PEA are already trusted for their safety standards and service quality, he said lower prices would encourage more households to adopt clean energy solutions on a wider scale.
In addition, the two agencies were assigned to accelerate proactive public relations campaigns to educate citizens about the benefits of installing solar rooftops through state agencies, as well as how they can access one-stop services covering installation permits and loan coordination with financial institutions.
“Our key objective is to ensure that people can access clean energy without taking on excessive financial burdens,” said Mr Polapee.
