The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has outlined plans to complete expansion and development work across all of its six airports within the next two years.

Established in 2002 following the privatisation of Airports Authority of Thailand, AoT operates Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport, the Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Hat Yai International Airport and Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport in northern Thailand.

AoT chairman Prasong Poontaneat told the TTR Weekly that the renovation of terminal 2 and concourse 5 at Don Mueang International Airport would be completed by August and the services will open in September.

The improvements are likely to increase the airport’s capacity from the current 18.5 million to 30 million.

AoT is currently involved in three projects at the Suvarnabhumi Airport, including the improvements to the mid-field terminal, passenger terminal and overall infrastructure.

The projects are likely to be completed by 2019 and are expected to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 45 million to 60 million.

Additionally, the authority is planning to construct a third runway at the airport that is undergoing an environmental health impact assessment (EIA) by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning.

There are also plans for a second passenger terminal.

AoT has completed 70% construction of a new terminal at the Phuket International Airport, Once completed, the terminal will increase the airport’s capacity from the current 6.5 million to 12.5 million.

At the Chiang Mai International Airport, AoT is focusing on introducing improvements to passenger departure and arrival areas and car parks.

Work is expected to be completed by 2018.

The second-floor of the terminal at the Chiang Rai Mae Fah Luang Airport will be converted to an international passenger hall with the addition of more check-in counters.
