Several Bangkok Data Centres Face Investigation Over Permits, Fuel Stockpiles

Several data centres in Bangkok are operating at unauthorised locations, with some lacking certification documents, Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob said on Tuesday. He said authorities had been aware of the issue for some time and were gathering information on multiple sites.
Some of the facilities were reportedly converted from premises previously used for other businesses. Officials are examining when and how they were established, including whether they began operating before relevant regulations were introduced.
Chaichanok said reports that the data centres had stockpiled fuel to generate electricity were likely true, although the quantities remained unknown. Relevant agencies and the Royal Thai Police are investigating whether the fuel storage violated the law and whether foreign investors were involved.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, who chairs the Board of Investment, said he would discuss the issue with National Economic and Social Development Council Secretary-General Danucha Pichayanan after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting. Ekniti said the sector needed to be brought under proper regulation because some operators lacked certification documents.
