A new 30-million-baht sports complex in Songkhla province has drawn sharp public criticism for a sharply angled running track that is not safe or practical for use.
The authorities responsible for the project in Padang Besar town in Sadao district have responded by saying the track was “not intended to be used for athletic competitions but only for walking”.
Complaints mounted after pictures of the completed sports complex were posted on the Facebook page of the Padang Besar municipality.
Dech-it Khaothong, a former MP for Songkhla from the Democrat Party, said the town needed a public sports venue as borrowing facilities from the private sector might make it harder to organise events.
After receiving budget approval, authorities decided to build a football pitch first. Due to the limited land space, it was impossible to build a standard running track after that, he said.
“The track was never intended for athletic purposes but only for exercise path for walking,” he said, adding that the project had not yet officially been handed over and could still be modified.
“The track is only a bonus, and as for the pitch, it meets all international standards,” Mr Dech-it said.
However, people were still asking if this was flawed project planning, saying further fixes would only cost more money.
