ONYX Hospitality Group plans to open more properties in Thailand and across Asia to reach a target of 81 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments by 2018.

Speaking at a media briefing, Wednesday, the group president and CEO, Peter Henle,  said ONYX currently manages 51 properties with 37 actually operational and 14 properties under development.

“We plan to have 81 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments by 2018…the project is on track,” he said.

Of the 14 properties under development, six of them will be branded Amari, three each for Shama and OZO, and two for the Mosaic Collection.

“Our goal is to become a leading Asian hospitality provider by 2018. After six years, Amari is now just one of our brands in the ONYX Hospitality Group portfolio and the number of operational properties has grown from 15 in 2008 to 37 today.”

Since 2008 the group has reported an increase in gross operating profit of 85%, which sets it on track to achieve its target to triple GOP by 2018.

“Despite 2014 being a challenging year for properties in Thailand, the group revenue should be 12% ahead of 2013 by year end. The booking pace has improved for Thailand properties during the last quarter with business in Bangkok, Samui and Phuket back on track.

“Amari brand has been establishing itself in new markets and earlier this year the group welcomed the first football themed property in Thailand with Amari Buriram United. It was followed by Amari Dhaka, which soft opened in Bangladesh in June.”

Mid-range brand, OZO, is also growing. This year  branded hotels opened in Thailand and Sri Lanka, with OZO Chaweng Samui (the brand’s first resort property), OZO Pattaya and OZO Colombo, the first of three OZO properties in Sri Lanka, he said.

This year, the group opened nine properties operating across all portfolios. They were: Amari Buriram United (60 rooms); Grand Pujian Residence Shanghai (116 rooms); Nova Park Pattaya (94 rooms); Ekamai Gardens Bangkok (46 rooms); OZO Chaweng Samui (208 rooms); Shama Heda Hangzhou (102 rooms); OZO Colombo Sri Lanka (158 rooms); Amari Dhaka Bangladesh (134 rooms); and OZO Pattaya (164 rooms).

The group will also renovate Amari Phuket and Amari Palm Reef Kho Samui next year.

Following enhancements to the property last year, Amari Phuket will unveil its new Ocean Wing in June 2015. Comprising of 148 one and two-bedroom apartments, overlooking the Andaman Sea, the expansion will increase the property’s total inventory to 345 rooms.

Amari Palm Reef Kho Samui will close 1 April 2015 to undergo renovations and will reopen 31 March 2016. The entire property will receive a fresh new look, including Italian restaurant Prego and a new innovative all-day dining concept.

Currently, the group property portfolio consists of 13 Amaris (Thailand, Doha, and Dhaka), 10 Shamas (China, Hong Kong and Bangkok), nine Mosaic Collection properties, four OZOs (OZO Wesley Hong Kong, OZO Chaweng Samui, OZO Colombo Sri Lanka and OZO Pattaya), and one Oriental Residence Bangkok- Standalone.
