Mobile cinema brings entertainment, learning to rural community in Thailand

Smiles lit up the faces of residents young and old in Phu Khieo district when Southeast Asia’s only mobile cinema, the cinemobile Chalerm Tasana, arrived in town, bringing a blend of entertainment and learning to the rural community throughout this week.

Chaiyaphum deputy governor Ballang Waitasiri, other senior officials and local residents were on hand to welcome the huge vehicle when it arrived at the Phu Khieo municipal compound on Monday.

It is a great opportunity for residents to experience quality films in back-to-back screening, with student sessions running from 9am to 11.30am and from noon to 2.30pm. It is open to the general public from 5pm to 7pm Monday to Friday. It can seat 100 people at a time.

This cine-truck brought not only entertainment, but also a learning and education unit helping young people develop their imaginations and emotional growth.

The Cinemobile, the first and only one of its kind in Southeast Asia, is run by the Film Archive (Public Organisation). Assembled in France, the 80-million-baht vehicle is 11 metres wide when opened out and 23m long.
