Prime Minister Hun Manet’s current visit to China may have paid dividends for the Kingdom’s energy and transport infrastructure, as well as manufacturing and agriculture, with nine leading Chinese companies expressing interest in expanding their presence in Cambodia.
They shared their intentions during a series of meetings with Manet, who is in China to attend the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meetings on Global AI Governance, held from July 15-17.
A July 16 statement from the prime minister noted that discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation and encouraging new investment in sectors aligned with Cambodia’s long-term development priorities.
Among the companies, China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), which has operated in Cambodia since 2008, highlighted a number of completed projects, including the Battambang water supply system, the National Stadium sports village, the Ministry of National Defence headquarters and the Cambodia-China Friendship Hospital in Tbong Khmum province.
CRCC chairman Dai Hegen said the company intends to expand its investment in Cambodia’s transport infrastructure, digital infrastructure, renewable energy and integrated investment, construction and operation projects.
Meanwhile, China Energy International said it plans to diversify beyond its existing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities in the Kingdom’s energy sector by investing in cement production, water treatment and renewable energy projects.
Welcoming the proposal, Manet noted that the development of clean energy remains one of the Royal Government’s key priorities.
“Renewable energy already accounts for around 62 per cent of Cambodia’s electricity generation, and the government is working to increase that figure to 70 per cent by 2030,” he said, adding that Cambodia is keen to introduce advanced technologies to improve the efficiency of existing power generation facilities.
China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) also reaffirmed its confidence in Cambodia after investing in the country since 2008, primarily in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
CMEC chairman Fang Yanshui explained that the company is working closely with local partners on the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant in Koh Kong province and is seeking further investment opportunities in the energy and agriculture sectors.
He added that CMEC is encouraging other Chinese companies to explore investment opportunities in Cambodia.
Manet welcomed the company’s continued commitment, noting that energy security is essential to Cambodia’s development. He suggested that investment in the energy sector would not only meet domestic demand but could also support regional electricity trade under the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
Shandong (Cambodia) Economic and Technological Development Zone, which has invested in Cambodia since 2012, said it plans to expand beyond its existing agricultural operations, including cashew cultivation and industrial park development, with a particular interest in renewable energy projects.
Consumer electronics giant Haier Group explained that it has partnered with a Cambodian company to establish a tablet assembly plant aimed at producing affordable devices for students and workers in the informal economy, helping to expand digital access and support distance learning.
Yuanda Group said it is exploring investment opportunities in education, agriculture and digital technology, citing Cambodia’s rapid economic development and long-term growth potential.
Fujian Jinlu Daily Chemical, a leading manufacturer of household consumer products, expressed interest in establishing a manufacturing plant in Cambodia to produce products such as insecticides, laundry detergent, tissue paper and kitchen supplies.
Artificial intelligence company Beijing Star AI said it is working with Cambodian partners to explore investments in four key areas: an ASEAN Regional Intelligent Computing Centre, a Film-Grade AI Agent Research and Development Centre, a Cross-border AI Short Drama Distribution Center and an ASEAN Digital Commerce Operation Centre.
Meanwhile, CHINALCO (Aluminum Corporation of China) said it is assessing investment opportunities in Cambodia’s steel manufacturing and mineral resources sectors, building on its expertise in mining, infrastructure development, special economic zones and railway construction.
