Japanese firms Mitsui & Co. (TSE:8031) and Toyo Engineering Corp. (TSE:6330) said Tuesday that they have jointly won contracts to build seven highly efficient natural-gas-fired power plants in Thailand.

Each signed the deals — estimated to total roughly 70-80 billion yen (US$841-961 million) — with wholly owned units of Gulf JP Co., a Thai subsidiary of Electric Power Development Co. (TSE:9513), or J-Power. Mitsui will handle the construction work, while Toyo Engineering will supply the equipment.

Six 110mw facilities and one 120mw facility will be built in the suburbs of Bangkok, with construction expected to begin this month and be completed by October 2013. The power plants will use natural gas as fuel and recycle heat generated in the process.
